The board asked him to display his cases at the AAO meeting the same year. He was again Board Certified in 2000. His interest in complete patient care, not just cosmetic alignment, took him on a journey that has last throughout his career. It was hear he began a second career in teaching orthodontics. For 11 years he taught with the institute in California. In 1999 he helped start the Advanced Education in Orthodontic group to continue the incorporation of Functional Occlusion into the orthodontic field. The AEO group has continued to the present in the US and is currently beginning international courses.
During his practice of orthodontics he has published articles on Functional Occlusion in Orthodontics, developed orthodontic instrumentation and developed computer programs to aid in patient diagnoses. He was one of the first to incorporate 3d diagnosis into the practice of orthodontics. During his tenure at the University he was involved in 14 master thesis that involved functional occlusion.
During his years of private practice he has maintained an active lecture series on functional orthodontics in the US and internationally.
In his spare time, Dr Freeland enjoys not only teaching but has maintained an interest in metal and woodworking. These endeavors have translated into many gifts to his 3 children and 6 grandchildren.
